RESEARCH STEPS ….

On the 12th Nov meeting, we discussed general research steps. Generally these steps  are:

1. Identify problem statement that related to your field,
2. Do literature review to determine current state of knowledge,
3. Determine research goals,
4. Identify and set research methodology,
5. Identify research questions and technical questions,
6. Determine research objectives,  (problem statement, research goals and objectives are related to each other)
7. Do details literature review to determine implementation and contribution steps,
8. Performing preliminary experiment to explore the opportunities of problem solution,
9. Apply appropriate methods to produce research results.
10. Performing verification and validation experiment to justify each of research contribution,
11. Write up research result.

We also discussed the differences between research methodology and propose solution. I do hope everybody understand that there are at least two school of thoughts. These are:

• separate them as two different entities, and
• combine them and treat them as one entity.

As explained in the meeting, you can follow any of these school of thoughts, as long you write the explanation in details. Most of the time we cannot predict what is in the examiner mind.

In the meeting, we discussed briefly three research approach, generally these approach are:

1. Choose core references and modify techniques to suit and solve the problem statement,
2. Choose core references and enhance the core proposed techniques to solve the problem statement and gives better results,
3. identify core references and get ideas on how to propose a total new solution.

If you decide the 1st approach, yes it will simplify your work but you will experience a very tough viva, if you decide the 2nd approach, yes it will simplify your work and benchmarking procedure yet it will not ease your viva, and if you choose the third, yes, it will be very tough work, and difficult to do benchmarking but if you success, your viva will be easy like “eating kacang”.

Alhamdulillah I am in the 3rd category.. hopefully…my viva will be easy like “eating kacang “….. “yes, it will be very tough work, and difficult to do benchmarking but if you success, your viva will be easy like “eating kacang”.”
